Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the demanding standards for female beauty and the dreaded aspects of ageing. Demi Moore delivers an inspired acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into presenting a workout series on the small screen. Edged out due to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and terrifying procedure called the Substance. This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who takes a break from covering international wars to join a luxury cruise alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich individuals. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and everyone claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Out now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries in this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He portrays a narcissistic celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to visit a birthday party in Mallorca for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, prime time, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a continuation. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

This week's second offering from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
