The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
