The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
