A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
